diy ~ framed chalkboard

i gave you a little sneak peak on my super bowl post, but now i can finally give you the full scoop on my latest diy project ~ my framed chalkboard.

even though over time i have seen a million variations of chalkboards, my main inspiration came from the pottery barn dining room below. i loved that they had their wines listed on it, and since we are huge wine-os i thought it would be a perfect use for ours.

i wasn't ready to dedicate an entire wall to chalkboard paint, so i decided to do a smaller one and frame it. the idea was to replace the thrifted mirror currently hanging above our dining table. *when i bought the frame it was a glittery gold, and meant for the bedroom. i hung it above our table for the holidays so i wouldn't have a bare wall. :)*

i had actually been looking for a giant vintage picture frame for a few months, but i could never find one that was worth the asking price at the thrift stores around here. as a last resort, i ended up stopping by michael's and got an amazing deal on this 24 x 36 inch frame.

i also bought the black chalkboard spray paint from michael's, and after checking the can, i decided i would just paint the glass chalkboard.

since we don't have a yard or a garage for all my projects, i do them on our deck. i've definitely left paint on the ground before... but this time was a huge mess!!

after doing my first coat of the black, i noticed it was ALL over the deck. i grabbed a paper towel to see if i could get any off, which was dumb of me because the deck is textured. i ended up getting paper towel flakes all over my wet paint. :( then i tried to wipe it off, which only made it worse, and in the end i basically used the whole can of chalkboard paint just to cover up my mess! i think you can still see spots where the paper towel landed, but i'm sure my friends and family will never say anything! :)

next, i spray painted the frame white. i love the way white contrasts against our dark walls, so any time i have an option to paint things... generally they end up white!

i can't lie... i got white paint everywhere too. i felt bad telling the mister, but he took it surprisingly well. :) i think he is used to my disasters now! i told him i would repaint the deck, so i hope i keep that promise, but maybe i'll buy a rug until then...

here's a shot of the deck post painting ~ it's worse in person. trust me. even izzy can't believe it.

after all was said and done, the framed chalkboard turned out perfect!

and the thrifted mirror i painted ended up on the buffet. it will probably stay there until i finally paint the master bedroom walls. then she will go where she belongs :)

what do you think? do you have a chalkboard wall or framed chalkboard in your house?? if so i want to see! send me pics :)

oh that's so great! i mean, not about the deck, but the finished product looks so good. i used to be a teacher and i painted a door once in magnetic chalkboard paint. that way the kids could draw on it and play with magnets on it. i haven't done much with chalkboard paint since then though.

That is so cool! I've been thinking of doing the chalkboard thing, but I hate chalk. It's a phobia of mine. :)

Is the deck painted? If not, then you might be able to use paint thinner to get the black and white paint off. If it is painted with a base, then after using the paint thinner, you would most likely have to do a coat of the deck color back over it.

It looks very cool! And in the future you'll only focus on the finished result! I love this. Congrats on making something so fun.

What a gorgeous chalk board, and such a clever idea to list your wines on it! I would so love to get around to making a framed chalkboard one of these weekends...

I love the idea for the framed chalkboard. It looks great! Will you write your wine selection on it?

I wish I was thrifty, people find awesome things. I'm not a big enough shopper to be very thrifty.
