legally driving

after two trips to the dmv and one trip to the la superior courthouse... i may have wasted a total over 5 hours of my precious time, but i am now a legal driver once again. :)

this all started when i finally decided to get my birth date fixed on my drivers license at the same time it needed to be renewed. for the past four years it's said 12-29 instead of 12-24, and honestly i didn't even notice until a couple years ago when i was in the emergency room. i told them my bracelet had the wrong birthday, and they showed me it matched my DL. kinda ridiculous ~ i know...

anyway, so i went to the dmv in december, and the nice little lady who tried to fix my bday, said... "oh wait a minute, it appears there's a little problem".

that little problem turned out to be a big problem! partially my fault, but partially the dmv's. she informed me i had two failure to pay and failure to appears under my correct birthday, and that i should have never been given a california license because my illinois license had been suspended since 2004!! uhhh what?? i've been illegally driving for the past six years? i was definitely flustered, and sort of worried police officers would be storming in to cuff me and take me away to jail. thankfully the mister was there to reassure me that i was not "really" a felon. :)

how was this my fault?

when i first moved out here i was driving on an illinois license for two years. in that time i managed to get the first two tickets of my life. (p.s. neither was for speeding :) which is sort of surprising if you've been in my car.) it's true i didn't pay by the dates i was supposed to, and i missed both of the court hearings. big oops, but when your broke as a joke, food = priority! in the end, between the two tickets i paid around $1,400 in fees & i even eventually went to court. the important thing to note is that i paid all of those fees back in 2004 & 2006, so i have no clue why my license said it was suspended.

how was it the dmv's fault?

a few months after i paid all my dues to los angeles, i applied for a california license. i took the drivers test, scored super high, and they sent me a new DL in the mail. as i mentioned earlier it had the wrong birthday, and i should have noticed, but the clerk should have entered it right. <-- i swear my 4's do NOT look like 9's!! if they had put the correct birthday on my license application, then i would have never been issued an invalid DL to begin with.

soo in order to fix this mess, i had to go to the courthouse and see if they could help my problem. after two very entertaining hours (there are some amazing characters in a courthouse at any given time), we met with a woman who confirmed that i had in fact paid my dues to society. she wasn't sure how, but some my payments "fell out of the system". she gave me a note to give back to the dmv so i could get a new license, but said it wouldn't be necessary because their records are linked.

almost in the clear, i finally was able to get a new appointment at the dmv yesterday. (from dec. 29th until yesterday, according to my records my license was not only suspended, but also expired... amen for NOT getting pulled over!) i thought my appt would be a speedy one, but somehow the courthouse records had not been updated to show that i had been in and spoke with them. thankfully i had my little note. :)

it took forever to get my illinois record combined with my incorrect california record combined with my NEW correct california record. i also had to pay a few to reinstate my license, and also renew it. another $100 to LA. boo! after we had been there forever, i had given my thumb print, and taken a new picture i went to verify my info for my new DL... and guess what... somehow they had the wrong birthday AGAIN! oy vey people!! so i had to do the process ALL over, including new picture, more thumb printing, etc.

the good news is, after all that nonsense, i am now officially & legally allowed to be driving once again. gee whiz :) can't wait to see where the road will take me...

where's the road taking you today?
(p.s. my little tweak was changing "the creator" to "God", :) i liked it better!)

Goodness! What a hassle! I'm dreading having to renew my license here in CA, since we're not technically residents. We're here for Air Force, but we still are residents in OK. So I have no idea how they do that!

oh my what a pain! hate to say it but the Illinois DMV isn't any better. Actually I issue came w/ the social security people. they sent my card to the wrong address, and of course it's normal mail so once it's out there's no getting it back!

oh my. What a mess! Illinois is so messed up when it comes to tickets and licenses and dmv's and all of that. They mispelled my first name when I went to get a DL with my married name on it. Who spells their name Meagam? But that doesn't sound nearly as bad as what you went through. I'm glad it worked out and that you're legal! I love that picture at the bottom - how nice it must be to live in California vs. Illinois!

OMG are you serious?! That is beyond a nightname!! Good ol' LA. I live in the city and I swear they try to find any way to charge you money. The city is so in debt they take it out on us!! So sorry you had to go through all of that but YAY for it being over :)

Oye! That's some craziness at the dmv. I am glad you got settled. CA dmv seems very complicated. Enjoy your wheels and have a great weekend.

Oh man! What a mess. There should really be a better way to transfer your drivers license from state to state!
